light installation for St. Mary’s church

aka Suprachiasmatic Nucleoid

The ‘Suprachiasmatic Nucleus’ is the part of the brain that regulates the 24-hour cycle. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suprachiasmatic_nucleus

In 2008 I was commissioned to create a permanent light installation for St. Mary’s church on the outskirts of Rotherham. This records changing light levels inside the church during the day⎯1000 frames from sunrise to sunset⎯and plays these back throughout the night on the clock tower using LED lighting units. The work has been running since the 1st of April 2009 and will complete a years cycle in April 2010.

Recordings are taken each day and stored. watch a video of light changes recorded on 1st april 2009.

Each one of these can be viewed as a plot 1000 x 12 pixels. Here are some examples
